Hypermind’s January 2020 forecast on Isabelle Kocher

“Hypermind’s January 2020 forecast on Isabelle Kocher” sits beside Isabelle Kocher’s portrait and a chart asking whether her term as Engie CEO will be renewed before June 2020, with Oui 21% and Non 79%.

On 30 January 2020, Émile Servan-Schreiber drew attention to uncertainty over Isabelle Kocher’s future as ENGIE’s chief executive. Her mandate was due to expire in May, he wrote. The Hypermind forecast image attached to his post gave renewal a 21.0% chance and non-renewal a 79.0% chance. These are the dated snapshot’s figures, not current probabilities.

What the market was forecasting

Avant juin 2020, le mandat d’Isabelle Kocher à la tête d’Engie (DG), sera-t-il renouvelé ?

Hypermind question shown in the image attached to the 30 January 2020 LinkedIn update

In our translation: Before June 2020, will Isabelle Kocher’s mandate at the head of ENGIE as chief executive be renewed? The question had two displayed answers, yes and no. It concerned an observable governance decision within a stated horizon, rather than a judgement of Kocher’s performance or a forecast of ENGIE’s share price.

The screenshot also contains a short January probability history, with separate lines for renewal and non-renewal. Reading the dated snapshot preserves the distinction between an expectation formed before the board’s decision and knowledge of that decision afterwards. The forecast gave the favoured answer substantial support while retaining uncertainty about the alternative.

The board’s decision a week later

On 6 February 2020, ENGIE’s board announced that it would not propose Kocher’s reappointment at the next shareholders’ meeting. The company’s press release said that her board mandate was due to expire in May and that the decision would bring her chief-executive position to an end. It stated that the group’s further strategic development required new leadership.

That announcement is consistent with the non-renewal outcome which the market had made more likely a week earlier; the original market’s formal settlement record is unavailable. The company’s announcement supplies an observable answer to the question about renewal, while the chart preserves the uncertainty that preceded it.

Servan-Schreiber’s post also referred to press reports about opposition to renewal. The forecast measures uncertainty over what would happen; it cannot establish the private motives of directors. ENGIE’s official explanation is reported as the company’s explanation, without treating speculation about individuals as fact.
