Hypermind’s eve-of-election Orbán forecast in 2022

2 min read
“Hypermind’s eve-of-election Orbán forecast in 2022” beside an Orbán portrait over Hungarian flag colors and a chart asking if he will win the April 2022 election, with Oui 81.9% and Non 18.1% on navy.

On 2 April 2022, the day before Hungary’s parliamentary election, Émile Servan-Schreiber reported that Hypermind’s prediction market gave Viktor Orbán four chances in five of winning. The attached market screenshot provides a more precise snapshot: yes 81.9%, no 18.1%. The prose and the image both describe a strong favourite, while preserving a possibility of defeat.

A binary question about winning

The chart’s question reads: “Le premier ministre de Hongrie Viktor Orban gagnera-t-il les élections législatives d’avril 2022 ?” In our translation: will Hungary’s prime minister Viktor Orbán win the April 2022 parliamentary elections? It is a binary forecast about winning, rather than an estimate of his party’s vote share.

The screenshot includes a history running from January into April. It shows the yes and no estimates moving over time, while the displayed 81.9% and 18.1% provide the values attached to the 2 April post. Reading the card means keeping the forecast question and date together: an expectation of winning is different from an estimate of vote share or the number of seats.

Servan-Schreiber added a brief expression of disappointment about what the result would mean for Europe. That was his political judgement. The market estimate and his preference are separate parts of the source: wanting a different outcome does not change the probability he reported.

What happened on 3 April

Hungary’s National Election Office records that Fidesz–KDNP won 135 of the National Assembly’s 199 seats. Its national-list vote share was 54.13%. The Inter-Parliamentary Union identifies the alliance as led by Orbán and confirms that it retained a two-thirds parliamentary majority. These official results support the ordinary-language description of an Orbán victory.

The contract’s detailed resolution rules and settlement notice are unavailable. The official result establishes an Orbán-led alliance victory, while the 2 April image records what the market expected beforehand. Vote share, seat share and the probability of winning are different quantities: 54.13% of national-list votes is an observed election result; 81.9% was a forecast probability.
